Just awake after filing the post-party
column and falling into bed around 5
a.m. (and having had a bacon
cheeseburger at 4:30 a.m. Bleurgh!)
The evening
started at Night of 100 Stars at the
Beverly Hills Hotel, which was amazing
for the mix of characters
(Larry Birkhead, Martin Landau, Omarosa,
Corey Feldman, and wait, is that Paul
Williams who used to be on “The Muppet
Show” in the 70s? Why yes, it is!)

FILM GUYS' POLITICS
By LIZ SMITH

-- 'MURDER IS a crime. Describing murder is not. Sex is not a
crime. Describing sex is!"
So wrote the scholar Gershon Legman back in
1977. If Gershon were still alive, he would probably in shock
these days.
WELL, NOW that Hollywood titan/ mogul David
Geffen has emphati cally aligned himself with the Democrat's
rising star Barack Obama and against his former friends
the Clintons, I suppose we will take it as a given that
the other undisputed king of Hollywood, Jack Nicholson,
who is on the outs with Geffen - will now throw his support to
Hillary. How else can it fall out?
TAKE A look at the photograph of my "famous"
desk appear ing in the new Vanity Fair, page 206. You'll see a
picture of my idol - Fred Astaire.
Fred and Ginger Rogers, his fabulous partner,
are coming back to the world's stage, in a manner of speaking.
This dazzling movie couple made nine musicals together for RKO,
and later "The Barkleys of Broadway" for MGM.
Before the year ends, Fred and Ginger will be
impersonated on London's West End in "Dancing the Night Away," a
multimillion dollar musical being put together by one of
Britain's top choreographers, Gillian Lynne, age 81, and
author Jill Arlon. A former Royal Ballet member, Lynne
has staged more than 50 musical hits, including "Cats," "Phantom
of the Opera," and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
She says, "There is something fantastic about
a man and a woman dancing close. I am sick of street dancing and
hip-hop . . . We want to give audiences escapism and magic and
take the electrifying charge of dance to new heights."
There'll be white tie, tails, waltzes, fox
trots, cariocas and the tunes and lyrics of Gershwin, Porter and
Kern. If "Dancing the Night Away" is a hit, it will definitely
come to Broadway.
There was a show on the Great White Way not
too many years ago said to be based on the Fred 'n' Ginger movie
hit "Swing Time." Titled "Never Gonna Dance," it didn't last
long, though it was ambitious and athletic. The time was not
right.
But now, it obviously hasn't been lost on
these Brits that "Dancing With the Stars" is one of today's hot
hits of television. So maybe audiences will pay to see more of
that genre on a lighted stage.
ARGUABLY ONE of the most famous stars ever to
appear in a movie is Elizabeth Taylor. On Tuesday, the
three-time Oscar honoree turns 75 with a lavish family and
friends blowout in Las Vegas. She'll take over one of those big
casino ballrooms. She won't say which one.
Miss Taylor adores Las Vegas. She married one
of her many husbands, Eddie Fisher, there. But she never
holds a grudge - against a city.
IN LA-LA land Sunday night, people will be
begging to get in to the Mortons party offered up by Vanity Fair
magazine. Across the street at the Pacific Design Center,
they'll be crammed to the rafters at the Elton John AIDS
fund-raiser with Sotheby's great auctioneer Jamie Niven
in control. And they'll trickle out of L.A.'s downtown
Governor's Ball and back to West Hollywood's "after bashes,"
holding onto their Oscars and crying with joy. A few will just
be crying.
If you're in Manhattan, the big party is at
Elaine's legendary saloon, sponsored by Entertainment Weekly.
The guest list now includes Angela Bassett, Mariska
Hargitay, Tatum O'Neal, Sam Rockwell,
Chris Meloni, Candace Bushnell, S. Epatha
Merkerson. This one is glittery but cozy.
Or, you can stay in bed with your hat on like
the other 50 million who'll be watching TV worldwide!
but,
LET'S not forget the Norby Walters' "Night of 100
Stars" at the Beverly Hills Hotel. This year it will attract
Virginia Madsen, James Woods, Jesse Metcalfe,
Terrence Howard, Daryl Hannah, Dominique Swain,
plus rapper Ludacris and country queen Tanya Tucker.
Had she not encountered fate
in Miami, Anna Nicole Smith planned to stumble down the Norby
red carpet. Well, Britney's still available, a girl who
is taking the rehab idea literally as "one day at a time." (She
only ever stays a day!)

and wife |
Poker mania has hit Hollywood with a bang. Such stars as Mimi Rogers,
Sharon Stone, Dennis Hopper and David Arquette are among the regulars at
music agent/entrepreneur Norby Walter's Wednesday weekly game at his
Westside digs. James Woods, known for his intelligent edgy performances,
extended his passion for poker by forming the Hollywood Poker Club, along
with Vince Van Patten, top tennis pro and actor. They were
among the celebs at Norby's Annual Night of the 100 Stars Oscar Viewing
Soiree, and even brought along a camera crew to record the festivities.
They interviewed such luminaries as Keith and David Carradine, Michael
Madsen (who was thrilled about sister Virginia's Oscar nomination), Lou
Diamond Phillips and the Gastineau Girls, whose TV series on E!
Entertainment is a hilarious hoot. But the intrepid reporters stayed clear
of sassy Sean Young, wearing a form fitting pink and white gown, to avoid
any clashes with ex lover Woods. Their famed relationship was front page
news years ago, when they both had problems splitting up – restraining
orders and all!

BATES RATES Oscar parties,
Night of 100stars Best Fashion 2004
(NOTE adapted)
Let’s start with Academy Awardsä
night and work backwards, shall we?
The best Oscar
dress wasn’t even at the Kodak Theater last Sunday night. It graced the
long lean body of Leigh-Taylor Young as she glided up the red carpet at
the
Beverly Hills Hotel for The Night of 100 Stars Oscar
viewing party. First you noticed the color
of the J. Gerard
outfit: warm chocolate. Then the style: a sleek tunic with a high neck over a
long skirt that moved like Katherine Hepburn’s trousers. The
material was soft 4-ply crepe. Finally, the message (you
thought Sean Penn
was the only one to make one?): A beautiful large peace sign on the back
of the top. Simple, elegant and timely. It so worked. J. Gerard is at 8575
Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.
Valerie Harper, John
Rhys-Davies, Dennis Haysbert, David Caruso, and Richard
Belzer were only a few of the famous faces at the viewing party. Robert
Goulet paused and looked around the lobby of the hotel.
“I think I used to live here,” he
joked. Caruso told me that the hot
on-screen romance between him and his CSI: Miami co-star, Sofia
Milos, is intensifying.

A few weeks before the Academy
Awards, I began to wonder, as seems to be the case every year, when I w as
going to nail down my plans for a potential watching party, soirée, or
get-together. I’d thrown fêtes in past years, inviting folks over for
pizza and burgers while stars quipped and cried, complained and
celebrated. Since I moved to Los Angeles, however, from the last months
of the previous year until their inevitable unveiling in March of the
following one (or, in this case, February), the Oscars’ palpable buzz
always hung heavy in the minds of everyone I knew.
So, the question remained, what could I possibly do to outrank the
barn-burners of before?
Thankfully, the answer arrived in a fortuitously
timed email sent from my esteemed FilmStew editor. “Any interest
in attending the Night Of 100 Stars gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel?”
read the invitation. “It could make for a good Beyond the Lens,
especially if you can get quotes from what might amount to a dream
Love Boat
episode cast.” How could I refuse? The evening promised to be a
star-studded affair right in the heart of Hollywood, with stars and
celebrities aplenty, and most importantly, an opportunity to dress up
and look good. Oh yeah, and there was an open bar, too.
